Karen Chadwell

Dentists for the Disabled & Elderly in Need of Treatment.

Founded in 1986, D-DENT—Dentists for the Disabled and Elderly in Need of Treatment, Inc.—is a recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. D-DENT began as a spin-off of Variety Health Center, eventually becoming its own agency after receiving a $100,000 grant from the Oklahoma State Department of Health’s Dental Division.

It is our mission to help improve the oral health of Oklahomans in need by providing preventative dental education and free comprehensive dental care through our state-wide network of volunteer dental professionals. Dentistry is often, and incorrectly, marketed as an elective and cosmetic choice. Tooth loss and dental disease isn’t “just a part of aging,” it can be prevented with education and accessible dental care.

D-DENT’s Restorative Dental Care Program has earned many awards and moments of recognition. Among these, we are a four-time recipient of the Blue Cross Blue Shield ‘Champions of Health’ awards, with their highest honor known as the ‘Rodney L. Huey Memorial’ award received in 2019. In addition, we have also received the distinguished ‘Oklahoma Nonprofit Excellence’ award from the Anne and Harry Zarrow Foundation & the Herman Kaiser Foundation. However, seeing the healthy smile of a person in need is the greatest reward.

With a network of more than 500 volunteer dentists, hygienists, dental assistants and dental laboratories, D-DENT continues to positively impact the overall health of many Oklahomans with no access to dental care.

Wade Griffith, Executive Director

Shanta Foundation

Wade Griffith is a graduate of Birmingham-Southern College and Vanderbilt University. While in graduate school at Vanderbilt, he was chosen for a Lilly Endowment program in Nicaragua. Specifically, the Lilly program funded research on successful economic development projects initiated by members of local communities rather than NGO’s. This new approach to humanitarian assistance captivated Wade. As a result, he spent the next twenty-two years of his life (and 30+ trips to Nicaragua) re-educating churches on how to do development and humanitarian work in a manner that doesn’t weaken communities by fostering dependence or undermining the self-reliance of the beneficiaries. His projects in Nicaragua involved medical clinics, clean water, housing, and education. An ordained pastor in the United Methodist Church, Wade has led three churches and served on staff in three others. His experience in church leadership has afforded him a wealth of experience in fundraising, volunteer recruitment, staff leadership, board development, and marketing. More importantly, his ministry experiences only deepened his desire to impact the lives of people living in extreme poverty. Wade has a wife, Julia, and two boys, Wade III and Haines. In his spare time, Wade enjoys golf, backpacking, fishing, reading, exercise, college football, and gardening.
